Rugby union could soon secure one of the most significant fixtures on the Australian sporting calendar if plans for an annual Anzac Day Bledisloe Cup Test between the Wallabies and the All Blacks receive final approval. The proposal is designed to create a marquee sporting event similar to the highly successful Anzac Day fixtures held by the AFL and NRL, which attract large crowds and strong television audiences across Australia each year. Rugby Australia has supported the concept for several years and views it as a major opportunity to strengthen rugby union's domestic profile. Progress has been delayed, however, because New Zealand Rugby had not previously endorsed the idea. That stance now appears to be changing, with New Zealand Rugby recently expressing support for the proposal. The matter is expected to be discussed further at an upcoming board meeting, raising hopes that the long-planned fixture may soon become a reality. If approved, the annual Anzac Day Test would provide rugby union with a high-profile event capable of boosting the sport’s popularity in Australia while celebrating one of international rugby’s greatest rivalries between the Wallabies and the All Blacks.
