South-east Queensland is set for two more days of unusually heavy May rain before sunshine returns and temperatures drop dramatically across the region. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, coastal showers on Monday and Tuesday could deliver up to 90 millimetres of rain to the Gold Coast, while Brisbane may receive up to 65mm and the Sunshine Coast up to 45mm. The rain is expected to extend inland to the Southern Downs and Granite Belt, bringing welcome relief to farmers after one of the driest starts to the year on record. Once the system moves offshore on Wednesday, dry south-westerly air will usher in colder nights, with Stanthorpe forecast to fall to just 4°C by Friday morning. Meteorologists have also warned beachgoers to take care, with a powerful easterly swell and large tidal variations expected along the coast. Conditions are forecast to improve from midweek, with clear skies and sunshine returning across most of Queensland.
