Mount Barney National Park after rising floodwaters cut off access during a school camp. Almost 50 students and teachers from North Lakes State College were rescued after becoming stranded by floodwaters at Mount Barney National Park in the Scenic Rim region. The group was attending a Year 12 school camp when rapidly rising water made it unsafe to cross a flooded road and return to their accommodation. Rescue crews from the Queensland Fire Department and the State Emergency Service used a boat to ferry all 48 students and teachers to safety before 10pm on Monday night. Emergency services also carried out more than 10 rescues across south-east Queensland as heavy rain caused widespread flooding. Two hikers stranded on Mount Barney were winched to safety and flown to hospital, though no serious injuries were reported. QFD officer Brad Moore praised the students and teachers for recognising the danger and avoiding unnecessary risks. All students were transported back to the school overnight and reunited with their families in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The Department of Education and school representatives thanked emergency crews and staff for their swift response, as wet weather continued across the Queensland region.
