The City of Perth has been formally put on notice by Local Government Inspector Tony Brown, who says the council must demonstrate significant improvements in governance and behaviour by June 19. Brown told councillors during a closed meeting that they must show a better understanding of their roles, improve relationships with administrative staff and each other, and strengthen decision-making processes. Failure to do so could lead to a formal inquiry, which may ultimately result in the dismissal of elected members. Chief executive Michelle Reynolds is reported to be on leave following the meeting, although officials have described this as an employment matter and declined further comment. Hannah Beazley said the conduct within the council was “simply unbelievable and unacceptable” and warned that local government amalgamations were once again being considered as part of a broader sector “reset”. The City of Perth has already undergone a major inquiry in recent years, and state authorities say they hope further intervention can be avoided if councillors take urgent action to restore effective governance and public confidence.
