will invest $100 million in rail improvements aimed at reducing the Canberra to Sydney train journey to under four hours. The rail connection between Canberra and Sydney is set to undergo a major $100 million upgrade designed to improve train speeds and reduce travel times for passengers. The Australian Government will contribute $50 million in the upcoming federal budget, while the Australian Capital Territory Government and the New South Wales Government will each provide $25 million. The investment will focus on priority works along the 321-kilometre rail corridor, particularly between Goulburn and Canberra. Planned upgrades include new boom gates and warning lights at level crossings, track alignment improvements, turnout upgrades, and enhancements to station and train stabling facilities. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the project would deliver gradual improvements over the next five years, with the goal of cutting the current journey time of more than four hours to below the four-hour mark. Federal Transport Minister Catherine King said the initial works would provide "quick fixes" to make the service more efficient and offer commuters a faster, more reliable alternative to road and air travel. Additional time savings are expected when NSW Train Link introduces a new fleet of faster trains from 2028 as part of a separate modernization project.
