Tain Stephens, a 20-year-old cadet at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), has been charged with five counts of capturing intimate visual data after allegedly using a hidden camera disguised inside a soap dispenser to film female cadets in a campus bathroom. The matter was heard in the ACT Magistrates Court, where prosecutors described the alleged conduct as "calculated and premeditated" and said it involved a sophisticated recording setup consisting of a wireless transmitter, camera, SD card and power bank. Police allege that approximately 40,000 files were discovered across multiple electronic devices seized from Stephens's room and vehicle. Investigators also claim that 17 soap dispensers across the ADFA campus had been tampered with in a similar way, and that additional charges may be laid as police continue to examine the material. The court heard Stephens had previously been investigated by military police and was allegedly found hiding in a waste cupboard before his arrest on Saturday morning. Prosecutors further alleged that he provided investigators with two incorrect passcodes when asked to unlock his devices. Stephens was granted bail under strict conditions and will return to Queensland to live with his father while the case proceeds through the courts.
