A long-running horticulture program at Marngoneet Correctional Centre in Victoria is helping provide fresh vegetables to families facing food insecurity across the Geelong region. Participants in the program grow and prepare dozens of vegetable boxes each week, which are distributed through local charity organisation Geelong Foodshare. The initiative has reportedly donated thousands of kilograms of fresh produce while also helping participants learn practical gardening and workplace skills. The program focuses on rehabilitation by teaching skills such as planting, harvesting, and crop maintenance, while encouraging positive community contribution and future employment opportunities. Community organisations involved in the partnership say the project not only supports vulnerable families with healthy food, but also gives participants a stronger sense of purpose and responsibility.
